I cant see anything obvious for Stephen either but his Burial confirms his age;

22 Sep 1803, St Thomas the Apostle, Stanhope
Stephen MADDISON age 72
Abode Bucklerdale
Occp   Mason. Died 20 Sep

I can see a Marriage same Church 12 May 1756 to Jane WALTON

Strange they only seem to bapt 1 child there JOHN 18 Oct 1765, only Father named.
Abode Whelps's hill end

JANE Maddison wife of Stephen buried 22 Jan 1787, abode Bucklerdale****

I will look around a bit more and see if I can find anything else :)

EDIT just looked at Tree on Anc.
Note please the Jane Maddison buried 9 Apr 1794 has no other info on record and not Stephens Wife.
Burial of her is above 1787

There is also a JOHN bapt 13 Dec 1771 Father CHARLES + 2 other children 1773/1774
Charles likely buried 20 Dec 1817 age 67 (c 1750)

Strangely a STEPHEN Maddison married Alice WALTON 05 Nov 1696 same Church

Not sure if you have used FreeREG but that is the source of my info.

Have you looked for any wills relating to the family?
If you're lucky, these can give a wealth of information about families.

The North East Inheritance database is a great place to start.
http://familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/nei/data/neisearch.php

I see there are a nice lot listed for the Maddison name, including 2 for the name 'Lowenger/Lowinger Maddison', which I see is part of your family, and a very unusual name.

I see from the transcripts of St Thomas church marriages on Genuki, a Lowinger Maddison married Anne Story 16 Nov 1665 at Stanhope.
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DUR/Transcriptions/STP1613
Also one at Stanhope for a Lowinger Maddison 10 Sept 1700 to Sarah Greenwell.
Marriage of an Anthony Maddison to Mary Bainbridge 6 Nov 1800.
John Maddison to An Robson 9 June 1726.
John Maddison to Mary Watson 30 Jan 1732
John Maddison to Elizabeth Todd 3 June 1741

Plus many others

On familysearch.org, fathers baptising children at Stanhope between 1700 and 1740 are Thomas, (5), Lowinger, (2), John, (3), and Anthony, (2).
No Stephen for any of them unfortunately, but you should really check the original register, as it is not unheard of for entries to be missed out, or unreadable, or mistranscribed, or there may be no entries at all for some years, either because those pages are missing for whatever reason, or lost, or there was no vicar at the church for some of the time.
Unfortunately, the St Thomas registers are still only on film on famiysearch.org, so you may have to wait until they are digitised, (they were supposed to have digitised all their films by 2020, so they're running a bit behind!), or visit the Durham record office to look at them

Film number 7939680 contains a printed book of marriages at Stanhope.
The marriage of Stephen and Jane Walton on May 12th 1756 has witnesses Joseph Barnfather and Nicholas Barnfather.
There were 5 marriages recorded that day. Another one was for a Thomas Barnfather and Ann Watson. Their witnesses were John Richardson and Thomas Watson.
It may be that the Barnfathers who witnesses Stephen Maddison's marriage were already at the church for the Barnfather marriage, and stepped in as witnesses, or they may have been friends or neighbours, or related in some way.

Film number 4047743 is the BTs for Stanhope, which you CAN look at at home, but it only starts August in 1762. I can't see any earlier films.
You could check the later baptisms of Stephen's children,
John's baptism 1765 gives their residence as Whelpshilland (I think!). No wife's name.
Unfortunately, the baptisms for 1776 don't seem to be there - but you could re-check.
