Hi,

Does anyone lnow which firm might be the best for checking DNA in Italy, please? When I last looked, Ancestry was not operating in Italy.

My father was in Italy during WW2 and the the family think that he could have offspring there.

He was in the Southern part of italy, around Bari.

Thanks,

Gordon

Trying to find such a close relative through DNA is a fairly long shot as only a very small % of people anywhere have actually tested. But I would say just test with the two main companies, 23andme and Ancestry, and upload your Ancestry kit to GEDMATCH, MyHeritage, FTDNA and LivingDNA. MyHeritage is sold directly in Italy, but you will still find Italian or people of Italian descent on Ancestry, in UK, USA, Canada, Australia etc. where most of the matches are.

My Ancestry DNA test revealed many Italian Cousins, and many of whom are still living there, many more of Italian descent are in the USA and UK.

A My Heritage DNA test has revealed many more.

My advice would be to take multiple DNA tests.

Finding online records for Italian BMD’s is sporadic.

To expand on 23andme, it does connect you with other members who've done a test, and share DNA with yourself (even giving you a % of similarity per person, and telling you how many generations back the link occurred). It might be the best one to start with for your needs on that basis, if you're lucky enough to find a user who's from the same area as your father.

It may be the case for some of the other sites mentioned too, although haven't personally tried them, can just vouch for 23andme.

Probably worth advising that whilst you can take DNA tests via Ancestry & 23&Me you cannot currently upload DNA data produced by another test company to either.

You can upload Ancestry Data to My Heritage.

Whilst I have not yet tried them there are companies offering Y DNA testing which may also be useful if your research is down an all male line.   Conversely an mtDNA test if down female line.
