'V' mark next to entries in parish register (1500s)

In the parish register of Chesterfield there are marks (which look like a V) next to many entries related to the Ash family. Baptisms, marriages and burials.

Does anyone have an inkling what marks such as this might mean? The family weren't poor; they were butchers, tanners and some were aldermen.

Does the 'V' mark appear against anyone else, or only members of the Ash family?

It looks to me as though it might have been added later, but it's going to be hard to guess the real reason. Members of a family that was notable for some reason? Part of someone's family history research?

They seem to be mainly next to the Ash family, though having had another look there are other marks, against people named Ash and others. I think you could be right about family history research - and they do look later.
