2 names on marriage entry
« on: Monday 01 May 23 08:19 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I've looked up a 1942 marriage for a friend and found that the entry lists the surname of his Grandmother as Greenhalgh or Kearney.

I've never seen a register entry list two names before and didn't want to jump to assumptions of previous marriages etc.

Any ideas?

Mawson - Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Durham

McGeorge - Kirkcudbrightshire, Northumberland

Where did the marriage take place?
If England/Wales - do you have her in 1939?
Does it have her father’s name?
Have you found a birth entry?

Assuming you are looking at an index entry ?

It means that the person appears on the register with two surnames ....such as  "x otherwise y" or " x formerly y".

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

These are the details he gave me... Grandad William Francis Graham born 21st 23d ? August 1918 died 21st October 1996 age 78..... Kathleen Graham ne Carney born 23d October 1921 Died 13 August 1986 age 65

They are believed to have been from the Liverpool area.

The marriage entry I found seems to match the time line as my friend has seen a photo of his grandfather in military uniform at the time of his marriage.

If I search on births I can find a marriage entry for Kathleen K Greenhalgh in Dec 1919 in Prescot.

It may be a case of needing to see the marriage certificate to progress.

Is this due to remarriage of a parent?

Could be any number of reasons - not something you can work out just from an index entry.

I thought 2 names for one person in the index related to marriage after divorce rather than widow/ers, as in widow/ers married in their married name and hopefully her father's name provided her maiden name, whereas the divorce details were included as in 'formerly the wife of xxxxx xxxxx, from whom she obtained a divorce' or 'the divorced husband of xxxxxx xxxxxxx, formerly xxxxxx'. So if both parties had been married before and divorced, both names are in the index twice.
