Need help reading journal
« on: Monday 01 May 23 03:01 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am needing help reading a journal of the voyage of the ship "British Empire" that arrived at Lyttelton Habour September 6th, 1864. In particular I am interested of mention of these passengers:

James Cox 39; wife Harriet Cox - Jane Cox, Tryphenna Cox, Harrietta S. Cox
Henry Symmons (Symmans?) - aged 22 years wife Sarah – Thomas F. 4 & Harry R. 2
Jack Daw
Son of (Mary Ann?) Poole - aged 1 month
John Tindall - aged 30 years
Christian McAlpine Reid - aged 11 months

Also of any significant information on the ship's arrival at Lyttelton.

It is a very large document ;)

One comment of possible significance to you in on page 44

Squeezed between 2 lines that describe the weather as they enter the harbour

"a poor man name of TINDALL died in the night of typhus ?? and was buried before breakfast to avoid enquiry."

The 2 lines which sandwich the above line are-
When we rose this morning not a breath of air was stirring .  It was very warm and pleasant.

You may already have this, but it gives mention to the "untimely death of Jack Daw" (by being blown overboard).

Hi
Page 37. I will type up a decipher if you have trouble reading it.
Iwonder if this is your COX? His daughter was 17 years.

Interesting as this newspaper article https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/LT18640906.2.12?end_date=14-09-1864&items_per_page=100&page=2&query=British+Empire&snippet=true&start_date=05-09-1864 says the ship was signalled late night of September 5th. It sounds like Mr. Tindall was buried at sea just before the ship sailed into the harbour.

That would be awesome Sue if you wouldn't typing that up - there are parts I can not read.

I found this record of deaths for the ship. Could the surname of Poole be a mispelling of Poore?
