" all of my reseach until now points to her name being Maryann "Mary" "
What is the information that records mother as Maryann/Mary?
When was 1838 birth registered? Who was the informant? What occupation or father?

Do you have Caroline's marriage certificate - does she give a father's name?
Secondly, are you certain you have the correct birth for Caroline? You seem surprised that the family is in Kent - where were you expecting them to be?

STEVENS, CAROLINE
Mother's maiden surname: MANNING
GRO Reference: 1838 S Quarter in WESTBURY UPON SEVERN UNION Volume 11 Page 445
This is more likely her birth. She says she was born in Gloucestershire.

Her baptism was 22 July 1838 at Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, daughter of Robert and Mary. Robert is a collier, abode Harry Hill. Perhaps this is it, although this says it opened in 1880.
