Street locations in Brampton, Cumberland
« on: Monday 24 April 23 20:22 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find Back Street/Lane and Low Street in Brampton. I have them in my 1861 - 1881 census returns but I cannot find them on maps so presume roads have disappeared or have been renamed or have lost their names over the years. If anyone can let me know where they may be that would be great. Many thanks in advance.

You can see Back Street here https://maps.nls.uk/view/121140533#zoom=5&lat=5832&lon=3989&layers=BT
Now called Main Street.

That's brilliant. So Back Street is now Main Street. Thank you!

Not sure if you noticed, there is a "Low Cross Street" (and "High Cross Street") on the same map. Possibly "Low Street" on the census.  :D

I had the same thought as maddys52, but when I used FindMyPast address search I found that most censuses have households logged with both Low Street and Low Cross Street. I’ve tabulated what I found below (numbers are households not individuals) but I did not go into the records at all to confirm.

Thank you for this. Yes I did wonder about Low Street also being Low Cross St. I have my family at Low St in the 1881 census but I suspect from the chart that both existed although it's odd that on the 1871 census there is apparently noone living at Low Cross St. I will keep sleuthing!

Amongst the reference points on Census 1861-1901 that link to Low Street are " Barley Stack, The Vicarage, Gas Yard, Police Station, Brewery". There was also reference to "Magistrates" (which I'm struggling to find again!)
As such I was drawn to the junction of Longtown Road and Back/Front Street - see old map already posted.
The Barley Stack no longer a pub (listed building) and is on Carlise Rd, close to the junction with Longtown Rd.

Just spotted "Townfoot" on the extreme east edge of posted map. Townfoot (or Townfoot Farm) pops up on one census leading to Low Street?

I was thinking along the same lines.
