L&YR Bankhall Running shed, Kirkdale
« on: Tuesday 11 April 23 20:41 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a link to a railway society with an interest in this particular running shed? I am researching my grandfather who worked for the LYR from about 1910-1945.
Many thanks.

All I can tell you is that the L&YR started a route using the 3rd rail - electric - IN 1904 - LIVERPOOL TO SOUTHPORT - Bankhall station is still very busy when Everton are playing at home - and the pavement that goes around Bankhall Station is the largest section of unbroken pavement in Liverpool - ie - no openings for roads - just continuous pavement - the L&YR later opened a Route to Ormskirk from Liverpool and - now known as Merseyrail - there are other routes as well - Hunts Cross to Southport / Liverpool - West Kirby / Liverpool Chester ... do you know if your Grandad was a Driver - Guard - Shunter - Wheeltapper - Cleaner by any chance ?? if he worked in the running shed I would guess a Shunter or a Wheeltapper

Many thanks for your reply garstonite. He was a fireman on his marriage banns in 1914, and by the 1921Census a driver, ending his career in 1945 (heart attack) as an electric train driver. Shows up as such in the 1939 register. Unfortunately missing from the 1911 census despite many years search. I'm keen to know when he started with LYR, my father believed it to be around 1904. I have a search request at Kew at the moment, but their records are very limited.

Do you mean Kirkdale Station not Bankhall ?

It’s a bit of a forgotten area in railway history but as far as I can see bankhall provided steam locos for the services from Liverpool exchange to the north of England and Glasgow, and engines for shunting duties at exchange.

There would be some motormen signing on there to work the electrics but the electrics were maintained exclusively at Southport

His age is a clue to when he started, he would have to be sixteen.

The normal route to a driver on the railways was the same everywhere, join as an engine cleaner, maybe two, three or more years as a cleaner then start “training” as a fireman, a lengthy process maybe four or five years till you become a full time fireman, then wait your turn in the queue for becoming a driver.

That is the norm, but obviously varies a lot from depot to depot, and ww1 may have speeded up the process as it put huge demands on the railway.

Many drivers jumped at the chance to train on the electrics as it was less mucky and regular hours but very stressful as you have no mate with you, and it’s boring just shuttling up and down all day.

About 1904 sound right but it may not be possible to put an exact date to it.

He would be in a union, try the union records at Warwick university, I am not familiar with them, but others on here have mentioned them.

I have to add a bit more, looking at the map of 1904 on the nls site bankhall likely provided locos for the north docks operation as well so may have been a lot more varied than I first thought, although a very cramped site and small by comparison it must have been a hectic life.

Factual information is hard to come by, despite my very extensive library.  :)

Hopefully this link will show you the depot in 1904.

Hi, and thank you all for your interest.
emeltom; Thanks for the link, I have emailed lyrs.org for info.
Mike; Thanks for a great map (which also shows my father's old school on Fonthill rd, now long gone), and some great information. You are quite correct regarding the long route to becoming a driver, and I can imagine him jumping at the chance for a cleaner job on electrics. My search request at Kew was cancelled, probably due to a poor understanding of the search requirements. They offered the services of a professional to do the checks but at an unspecified cost. I may travel down later in the year to try myself.
Thanks again all who have chipped in.
Peter.
