forest,

All I found was this in the 1890 filler...

Morristown, New Jersey Directories 1887-88, 1890-91

Name: William Hills
Location 1: N Y
City: Morristown
State: NJ
Occupation: Merchant
Year: 1890-1891
Location 2: 167 Speedwell Ave.

Unfortunately the filler does not list families.  Only people working.  It is taken from directories from areas at around 1890.

Sorry I couldn't be more help there.

Hi Megan

Thanks for your efforts - I don't think my grandfather was
a merchant unfortunately - he was a railwayman before
leaving England and again after he returned, so I think
the Pennsylvania railway occupation is probably right.

Thanks anyway - I have now managed to place them both on emigrant ships at least, which is something.

Megan, I would be very grateful if you could check your lists for a William Knowles and Mary Knowles who travelled to the US in 1893. They should be accompanied by a four year old boy William Allen Knowles and maybe a younger child Thomas Knowles. I am led to believe that they ended up in Sugar Creek, Iowa. Mary had a baby girl in 1895  Martha Eliza Knowles. Mary died in 1902 during/after childbirth and William and remaining family then returned home to England. I am hoping that they will show on the 1900 census. Any help gratefullly appreciated.

I looked through the indexing for what Ancestry has done for 1900 in and around Iowa state.  So far no matches, but Ancestry.com has just started making avalible the indexing for 1900 so I will keep checking for you, I am sure they are around in there somewhere.

Freeb any idea of what Joseph's middle name was?  No Wallis or Wallace listed in the census that fits the age of yours.  Perhaps he used his middle name?

eberg,

I am sorry to inform you but almost all of the 1890 US Federal Census was destroyed.  There are only some 6000 names left from the entire Census and I found no O'Brien's listed.  As for Peters or Pauls, again nothing that fit your relative.  Sorry and good luck.
