Help Finding Records for Macedonian Mule CorpS WWI
« on: Monday 13 March 23 07:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

My relative Arghyros Loizou Serghis served in WWI in the Macedonian Mule Corps of the UK. He was born around 1900 and lived in Kato Drys, Cyprus until immigrating to the USA in 1920 (Kato Drys spelling varies). Sometimes his name is put as LoizouSerghis Arghyros or Arghyros LoizouSerghis. His Regiment number was 9306.

He had a Metal Card, which I have a copy of, but I am looking for more information on his time in the service. I have checked the National Archives website but have only found his Metal Card.

If anyone has any tips, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Desperate To Find More

The Medal Roll indicates he served overseas from 11/12/17 - 20/1/19.
He received the British War medal but not the Victory medal.
This means he was not in a active theatre of war.
As such there will be no war diary.
He would have attested so his service record may still exist.
I would suggest contacting the Cyprus State Archive & see what they hold.

Thank you so much Jim1!

I will be contacting the Cyprus State Archives today.

How were you able to get his dates of service from his Medal Roll? I have his Medal Card but am not sure if this is the same thing?

Thank you again Jim1!

The Medal Index card is just a quick reference to the Medal Roll
which often contains more info.

My family is ecstatic! We always wanted to know his exact service dates. Thank you so much!

How did you find it? I did not even know a Medal Roll existed.

Is there a Medal Roll for Michael Serghi regimental number 11672?  Arghyros' brother was called Michael Serghi as Arghyros had a different spelling of the last name from his other brothers but had same parents. Cyprus seems to have this issue to this day. We have a Medal Card but are not sure if this is the same Michael Serghi and the service dates would be appreciated.

Thank you so much again Jim1!  :)

The Rolls are on Ancestry.
Michael was in for just a short time & discharged
before the end of the war which indicates he was
discharged due to sickness or injury.

Thanks a million Jim1!

We suspected that this was my great grandfather's brother Michael Serghi but wasn't sure. Those dates look like they make sense. My great grandfather went 1st to War  even though he was younger and went to the USA after Michael.

This really helps us in our search and is great to learn about our family!  :)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat!
(And well done, Jim1!)

I was poking around the UK Archives, as I had never heard of the Macedonian Mule Corps.

In the record set WO 405, it gives this description: The registers contain a single-line entry for each man, giving his number, rank, name, period of service, next of kin, home address and the occasional further remark.

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/r/C16161

Following the trail leads to this: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11192659
which shows his number is within the series.  I "think" you can order a page check based on his number and name, and just get his page, if the added information is of interest?

It may or may not be worth it for you, but here is the page check information:
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/pagecheck/start/C11192659

Hi Bbart,

Thank you so much for the information and links.

We are trying to contact not only the UK National Archives but also seeing if anyone has any other information. We know that the Archives that are Nondigitized have to be located first then you can request a copy.

We are hoping to learn more as we go along.  :)
