A burial or a memorial in St. Saviours Cemetery, Jersey, Channel Islands
« on: Thursday 09 March 23 17:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I would like someone to find a grave or memorial for a Alice Maria Mainland in the St. Saviour's cemetery. She was born in 1873 in London and died in 1958 at Braeside, St. Saviour. She stayed single all her life.
I did come across a family friend of hers who also lived for sometime in St. Saviour's at Beauvoir House. Frederick Adams who died in1938 in London but is buried in St. Saviours. On his grave is written Frederick of Mexico. He was an Railways engineer in Mexico for many years and worked for the British Govt. Alice M. Mainland and Frederick bought Beauvoir House together. There is supposed to be a sort of memorial to Alice on one side of Frederick's gravestone ? Perhaps she was cremated ?
Sorry about the long drawn out story. I wanted to give you as many clues as I could.
Hope to hear from someone ?

I'm not sure if the information you are looking for may be included here:
https://catalogue.jerseyheritage.org/collection/Keywords/archive/content.person.name/Mainland,%20Alice%20Maria/

The last item - "Croad and Sons Funeral Director" contains burial information. Subscription required.

I also assume you have seen this:
https://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Beauvoir,_St_S

"The side border of his grave is also inscribed ‘To the memory of ‘Alice Maria Mainland’. which is curious because she was a relation, but not his wife." (in Note 1)

Hi Maddys52,

Thank you so much for your info some of which I knew a little. What I omitted to ask was if there was anyone who could take a photo of this grave & memorial for me. The grave was Frederick Adam's and the joined? memorial of Alice Maria Mainland. [See previous Post.]

Thanks again,

The grave is in St Saviours New Cemetery, grave number 48, row 3. I'll try and look over the weekend.

Interested in Fredrick Adams and Alice Mainland, not sure what the connection with them was, Frederick was a keen Diatom researcher and Alice did write an index to Diatom works.

On two of her travel documents Alice is noted as cousin. I am unable to find any family connection, but did find a marriage of an Adams to a Mainland, but neither seem connected, so maybe Alice was a distant cousin.

She was an assistant to Frederick and did some indexing.

Fredrick was married to Mary Naomi Bull, but not found much on her.

Hello Nick,   Thank you so much for the information you've found about my Great Aunt Alice Mainland and Frederick Adams.
It was about 2 years ago when I was last researching Alice and Frederick. Just as well I hadn't closed
the lookup request ! I knew nothing at all about the Diatom research and Alices involvement in in it.

I've finished compiling my the Mainland family Saga now but my search hasn't ended. It never is of course.
I'm determined to find the connection between the Adams family and Alice's Mainland family. I do know that the Adams family were in the engineering business and that there were two Mainland men in  Railway engineering.
I'll just have to get started again !

Thanks again,
Jenny de Rooij, Nederland (ex NZer)

Dear Jenny
Pleased you still have an interest, I post the link below on Frederick. I will try to get to the Jersey Archives next week to see if the wills reveal any clues, Fredericks is shot, but Alice's maybe of interest.
I will see if I can find out when they purchased "Beauvoir" and if in deed Alice did buy it with Frederick.

Sadly I can not find the Adams connection with Alice, it does not seem to be a close connection, as when I found the marriage, I could not connect it. I think it was a Susanah Adams, and circa 1830, but not sure.

Also a link to the house "Beauvoir" with information from an Adams descendant:

Taken some work, but have found the connection - Alice Maria Mainland was Frederick's first cousin once removed's niece, so Frederick's cousin Catherine Alice Adams brother in law George Edward Mainland's daughter was Alice Maria.
