Births have 2 surnames

Hello,
Can anyone help please. I have a family in Salford . On Free bmd there are 5 birth entries each registered twice with 2 different surnames & all have the same Mothers maiden name?

The births will be registered once; but indexed twice

Probably on the certificate as Smith or Jones; or Smith otherwise known as Jones.

It's also possible that mother and father weren't married - so births were index under both surnames.
If after 1874, father would need to be present at the registration AND give his permission.

Thank you for the reply. Don't think they were married as can't find a marriage anywhere for them. I can understand if they weren't married that both of their surnames would be indexed but there are two surnames & a maiden surname? Kind Regards

Thank you.  Have you tried looking for a previous marriage for the mother.  Other than that maybe you need to purchase one of the certificates to see how the information is laid out

Yes I looked for a previous marriage for the Mother but  I can't find one. I also can't find the family on the 1921 census but they continued to have more children in the same area. I looked for them with all three surnames. Kind Regards

I would suggest that you take rosie99's advice and purchase one of the certificates.

Or why not post what details you have here of any of those now deceased & we may be able to help.  Difficult without knowing the actual facts
