Map of the manor of Middleton 1606 surveyed by John Norden

Kia ora

I would really appreciate it if anyone can tell me any of what the Latin says in this.  I am having trouble working out exactly the space that it fits into.  Wonderful maps of Sussex by Norden.

Someone might be able to work out some of the words but it’s really blurry and most of it is unreadable on my device. See what others say, but they may ask for a clearer image.

A description of the manor of Middleton in the county of Sussex, the lands of Sir John Spencer, made in the month of August in the year 1606 by John Norden.

Hi,

Are you having difficulty working out how plan of 1602 fits in to days landscape because land fell into the sea including St. Nicholas Church?

According to Sussex Record Society, there was a survey of 1606 giving info on the Church perhaps worth contacting them or the Record Office.

Would suggest that the plan 1602, contains the field names on each section and may well have a description which goes with it, but not photographed by Record Office.

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Spendlove, Strutt in London & Middlesex.

Thanks GR2 - I assume that is the transcribed Latin on the top right.  There are other bits and pieces on the main picture if you have any idea of them I would like to know.

Spendlove, yes how it fits in today.  Seems odd to me when I look at a map how any of it could fall into the sea.  Thanks for your suggestions.  Yes I assumed they were field names of the time.

Nga mihi nui (very best wishes)

That is so fascinating and I have no connection to the area whatsoever! (other than being a fellow NZer of Bronwyn)

Lucky you Bronwyn, though painstakingly research rather than luck has brought you this far.
