That is a different tree, but looks more reliable, and has the mother as Elizabeth Rowlands, although not all of the children seem to have been registered with that mmm.

Montgomeryshire Echo 11 March 1893
"...a months notice to be given Mr John Jones, Surveyor to the Board, to terminate his engagement.."

Montgomeryshire Echo 14 October 1893
"SURVEYOR'S REPORT - The surveyor's (Mr John Jones) estimates for the month..."

Montgomeryshire Express 10 September 1895
mentions "John Jones, late surveyor of the highway board"

The 1881 Census has him as "Surveyor", the 1891 as "District Surveyor,  the 1901 Census as "Farmer, Surveyor, Inspector Nuisances"

He entered the licensing trade in 1891 and when the vacancy occurred in 1895 as "Surveyor" he returned to his old trade? His son Edward and daughter Jane carried on in the licensing trade.

Daughter Mary's marriage coincided with his "dabbling" in the licensing trade?

John Jones, of Nantyfilldir, near Penegoes, took up his duties as district surveyor on 27 April 1874. His salary was £1 13s a week (Aberystwyth Observer, 25 Apr 1874)

His address on the 1871 Census is "Nantyddwyfilltir, occpn. farmer of 14 acres and carpenter".
