There was an Elizabeth Jones, age 14, born in Darowen on the 1891 census, daughter of John and Elizabeth, but he was a district surveyor.

I see that Mary Humphreys, wife of Edward in 1901, was also born in Darowen.

In 1891, there was a Mary Jones, b 1868, visiting the Red Lion in Darowen. She was also the daughter of John, the surveyor, on the 1881 census.

The reference to "surveyor" is interesting. I recall seeing John Jones, Red lion, being proposed for "surveyor" in a newspaper item about 1895? Will check again.

The Welsh language "Y Negesydd, 10 Apr 1902" carries the report of the marriage at Aberhosan of Miss T C Jones, dau of Griffith Jones, Tygwyn and Richard Jones, son of John Jones, Surveyor, Machynlleth.

I see that one of his daughters in the notice was Mrs Humphreys.

Also trees on Ancestry have John the surveyor as Mary's father.

Thanks everyone , we have come a long way this morning. I didnt know there were any trees on Ancestry for John Jones . I would be interested to know his wife maiden name if possible ?

Hello Kay , I just looked at that tree and the 1871 census given on that does not mention " publican " like the one I found ?
