Czech Republic - Hirsch Friedrich
« on: Thursday 02 February 23 12:53 GMT (UK) »
I have also posted this morning under Emigrants and Immigrants.
Friedrich Hirsch was born in Eiwanowitz in der Hanna now called Ivanovice na Hané in the now Czech Republic. Could anyone advise how I could go about tracing his family history and possible connections in the Czech Republic. He was a refugee to Ireland in 1938 from Wien Austria.

The above is a link to parish registers held for this town in the Brno archives, which cover southern Moravia. These will mostly be Roman Catholic. The archive does not hold any Jewish records, according to here:

Jewish records are held at the national Archives, Prague, see

Thank you very much fiddlerslass for the links.

I will check what year Friedrich was born. These sites will be a good place to start.

I think at the time of his arrival in Ireland he was Roman Catholic and I have no knowledge of if/when the family may have been Jewish.

Can I ask - do you know whereabouts in Ireland he went to live ?
there are a lot of Hirsch family in the 1911 census - could he have gone to stay with family ?
Rathdown / Wicklow / Armagh / Dublin  / Belfast / County Clare / Templemore / Belmont - a long list of locations for Hirsch family in 1911

Thank you garstonite,

Friedrich did not have any relations in Ireland. He came as a refugee and was dispersed with a small group of agricultural labourers to various parts of Ireland by the Refugee Council. I know his history since arrival in Ireland, but, want to trace the family back through Vienna and the Czech Republic.

Thank you fiddlerslass.

I think Friedrich would have been born in late 1880's. Unsure of when he went to Vienna but married there and would have been in his 40's when family left Vienna in 1938 fleeing for safety. I am not too bad at searching records but haven't a clue where to start in the Czech Republic and don't even know what records are available on line. As with my own family noone thought to ask Friedrich any family questions while he was alive!! I would love to find out who his father and mother were and if there is extended family. Tall order I know but I'm up for a search.
