Shadwell Middlesex - Opinion or advice
« on: Wednesday 01 February 23 06:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Being in Australia I have no concept of registration districts and locations.

Having discovered a baptism in July 1841 at St Paul's, Shadwell, Middlesex with a birth with which may match it which was registered 1841/SQ City of London Union.

The church was traditionally known as the Church of Sea Captains which the father of the child was but before getting to excited I wanted to get some opinions on the likelihood of this district covering Shadwell (Tower Hamlets). Any thoughts or comments appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Syd

The parents and child shown on the Baptism are accepted as correct from the research a marriage has not yet been located and it is possibly it was before 1837.

My belief is if I can pin down a registration district or confirm these to be correct I may have located the maiden name of the mother and then can progress my research.

Trees I have sighted have not identified her to date.

I think all the pieces of the jig saw could be in Shadwell

Shadwell was in Stepney Registration District but a baptism doesn’t necessarily take place in the same  parish as a birth.

Is Shadwell Stepney Registration District likely to be identified as the City of London Union?

Having checked all the birth registrations the closest is this one hoping I can pin this down as a real possibility.

Evidence so far suggest the mother and child had been restricted to Tower Hamlets

No, these registration districts are geographically separate entities. Shadwell was a parish in the Stepney district.

This shows what made up the districts:

No, It's the Stepney Union which is a near neighbour (about a mile away)

If you google familysearch historical maps, search for Shadwell and select Civil Registration District you can get an idea for yourself

Another tip for finding a registration district is to Google place name UKBMD ie Shadwell UKBMD
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE

Thanks

I will now look at that suggestion and endeavor to tie them down
