Think he is recorded as Robinson in the 1861 and 1871 census. In 1871 he is in Hamilton with 3 children, Robert Mary Jane and Agnes. Geneanet tree has his death in Dumfries in 1877, 15 June and burial in St Mary's Churchyard.

Your opening post only mentions a 7 generation chart but you don't say which of the Robison children you are descended from & you still haven't told us where Robert was born.  You also did not appear to know about the birth of daughter Mary Jane?

What was Roberts occupation on the 1858 marriage cert & what was his fathers occupation?

We need to know which of the children of Robert & Jane you are descended from - are you absolutely certain you have the right Robert & Jane marrying in Dumfries?

Here's the reason for asking

1871 for Dumfries - all Robison - not Robinson.  All children from Janet onwards were born Annan

Robert 36 b England - miller/grain dealer
Jane 35 b Gretna
William T 12 b England
Joseph 10 b England
Janet 8
Jane 6
Elizabeth 4
Robert 2
Thomas 6mths

There is no marriage in England for a Robert Robison to a Jane before 1864

What was Roberts occupation on the 1858 marriage cert & what was his fathers occupation?

His father was Robert Robison occupation Gentlemans Coachman and I believe his mothers maiden name is Harrison

Robert jnr was a coach painter journeyman

Robert in 1861/71 census born Dumfries

1841 census has a 9 year old Robert Robison at Midrow, Dumfries with Thomas Spalding and Mary Spalding.

1851 census at Queensbury Street, Dumfries
 Thomas Spalding 60
Mary Spalding 57 wife
Robert Spalding son 19 apprentice coach painter b Dumfries

I therefore wonder if Robert was actually Mary Spalding's son. There is a marriage in Troqueer of a Thomas Spalding  to a Mary Morrison in 1837. John could the surname you are reading as Harrison  perhaps be Morrison?

Hi, I am ready to be laughed out of court here. Carole's opening comments in post#12 are very valid and a response to them would be welcome. However I do feel the 1871 census details she posted are not our man.

Based on all the info posted this is my take on the life of Robert Robison.

Born c1831/32 in Dumfries, Mother Mary Morrison(as per marriage certificate) and father Robert
1837 Thomas Spalding marries a Mary Morrison
1841 census appears with Thomas Spalding and Mary as Robert Robison
1851 census appears with Thomas and Mary as Robert Spalding- occ apprentice "Coach Painter"
4.10.1851 death of Thomas Spalding aged 62 Dumfries
1858 Robert Robison marries Jane Beck
1861 appears as Robert Robinson-occupation Coach Painter-journeyman at the address re the birth of his daughter Mary Jane Robison
1862 Birth of son James Robison, dies aged 2 1864 Dumfries mmn Beck
1865 Birth of son Thomas Robison, dies aged 1 1866 Dumfries mmn Beck
1871 appears as Robert Robinson in Hamilton with wife & children occ-coach painter.
1877 Probable death aged  45 in Dumfries--details of death cert unknown at present

John

added:

Robert Robinson died aged 47 15th June 1877 husband of Jane Beck. His occupation Coach Painter. Death registered by son Robert Robinson. No fathe recorded but mother Mary Morris- occupation Growser (deceased)
