Hi,
I have just been going through the recently released Electoral registers for East Sussex, on Ancestry, trying to find my grandfathers family. After finding the family for most years, i found that for my Great Grandfather, there was 3 years he had vanished, my great grandmother was in the family house with most of the expected children, but he wasn't registered. I eventually found him with his son in Frederick Road Municipal Hospital for all 3 years, so trying to work out why they both might have been there, as asking round the family nobody seems to have any family stories that might explain it. At the time he was in his 70's and his son was around 50, and this was just after WW II (i.e. 1946 thru 48). Both of them are then back with there families on the subsequent registers.
I have tried searching for info on the hospital, but other than general details (i.e former workhouse, became St Helen's after the formation of NHS) i haven't been able to see much to give any hints on what type of hospital it was that may give a clue why they were there for 3 years. I am guessing that it may have been connected to t war, and perhaps it may have been some sort of 'mental' conditions (perhaps triggered from the WW 1 experiences), but i really don't know. Does anybody have any knowledge of what type of hospital it may have been ?
Thanks
Richard
