What's in a Name!!!!

hi all

does any-one know of a place called Tocherlaugh...Londonderry....(this is how it was written on his army records)
it seems this is where my 7x G.Grandfather was born 1780..ish...

any help would be much appreciated

If you go to

www.thecore.com/seanruad

and in the first table choose 'Londonderry' from the drop down box marked county, then press 'submit', you can see a very helpful list of Townland, Barony and Civil Parish names within Londonderry.

Nothing jumps out as being similar to the name you have posted here,  but it may be worth saying it out loud as you run through the various options just in case you find something close in 'sound'.

1819  - 1850ish
Thomas took Susannah there when he was discharged from the Royal Horse Artillery after Waterloo...
Then Susannah went to Port Glasgow (some of her children were there at this point )when Thomas died around 1850

would any one know of the Williams family of Faughanvale....Thomas married Susannah in Belgium and brought her back to Faughanvale where they had 11/12/13 children

Seamons was born in 1837 being the youngest
thomas, James,2 of  B. 1830 & 1832 (I assume the first James died) Susan, Janet, William, Alexander,Joseph, Paul, John, Charles, Matilda,

I have most of the info on the Williams family from port Glasgow till present day it just at this one bit that I've hit the proverbial brick wall, so any help would be much appreciated... I feel as if they just never existed before 1780 ish...

Hello Jean,

It might be worthwhile contacting the Ordnance Survey. Mapping in Ireland did not begin till 1830  but they may know about things prior to that date. The place name "Tocherlaugh" may have changed. I think I should end in "lough" rather than "laugh" for a starter. The address of the Ordnance Survey is -
