William Chamberlin and Hannah Whitlock

Hannah Whitlock married William Chamberlin 20 Feb 1823 at St. Mary's Nottingham. She was born 13 Oct 1797 at High Pavement Chapel. Believe that he was born in 1789 at West or East Leake Nottinghamshire.

By 1851, he is living with Hannah's sister, Jane Whitlock, and identified as a widow. A Hannah Chamberlain (cross spelling happens a lot) is buried at St. Mary's on 27 August 1933. Wondering whether anyone has access to parish records. According to the National Burial Index for England and Wales, this Hannah was 36 at death, which means born in 1797. There was a cholera epidemic at the time.

The above link is to the entry for William in the 1841 Census. He would appear to be living with more of his inlaws.

I cannot acces the Parish Register for St Mary's but it certainly looks like the burial you have found is William's wife.

Sadly, it looks like Hannah actually died as a result of childbirth:

Israel William Chamberlain, baptised on 27th August 1833 to William & Hannah Chamberlain at St. Mary, Nottinghamshire.

Hannah Chamberlain, buried 27th August 1833 at St. Mary, Nottinghamshire.

Their child, Israel, died aged 3 months. I imagine having a deceased mother increased the chances of infant mortality. They also had another child, Francis Oliver, born in 1832, died aged 1 month. Poor William, losing a wife and 2 children in such quick succession

Hannah Whitlock's mother was Frances Oliver (father John Whitlock) and this plus the age of 36 would seem to confirm that this is "the" Hannah Chamberlin/lain I'm looking for. I'm still a bit nervous regarding the spelling of the last name - just creates a level of uncertainty.

William Chamberlin was alive on census day in 1851. There is a death of a William Chamberlin later in 1851 recorded on the GR0 indexes, age 62, in Nottingham (D quarter).

Regarding the various spellings of the name you have to remember that a large majority of people were illiterate back in the day. Therefore they could only say their name, not spell it. Consequently any written name is down to the person who wrote it and how literate they were. You also have to take regional accents into account as well. Most people wrote down what they thought they heard which does lead to some weird spellings of names.

Thanks for the added information. William was living with his "sister's wife" Jane Whitlock in the 1851 Census at 6, East Street in Nottingham. This was also the place where he died on 06 November 1851. The death was reported by a neighbour Maria Smith, who lived at 7 East Street.

In the 1841 Census, William was living with Hannah's brother, Nathaniel Whitlock, and both Nathaniel and William were bakers.
