Finding people through national insurance numbers?

Just a thought... does anyone know whether we're able to ask hmrc to trave a missing person through their national insurance number?

I don't know the answer but I feel that a request would be refused on the grounds of Data Protection.

It is possible but it requires a court order.

HMRC are more difficult and the normal route is through the Department of Works & Pensions but persuading the Court to issue such a warrant/Order is pretty difficult. (quite rightly so as mentioned above re privacy concerns)

I can`t believe this !!

I`ve just spent a few hours trying to decipher HMRC website for this very thing !!

Now that info is falling out of my brain, I decided to rest a while and look at Rootschat. IT`s eerie that the first entry is my very question !!

I know where the person worked in 1953 ( a hotel) and I`ve a couple of addresses, plus an estimated age.

The Law has changed and for the better since we don't know the genuine purpose an unauthorised person would have to track someone down: "stalking" - "debt collector" - "alimony defaulter" et al.
When I worked for an insurance company into the 1970's, when we had an unclaimed matured policy and had lost contact with the policyholder, we could send a blank envelope with claim form c/o the Inland Revenue as it then was. Naturally we included other confidential details I'm not discussing here. The I.R. would only then dispatch our letter to the correct person without disclosing that address to the firm. It was not always successful though.

My wife and I had a similar issue. We had lost contact with a close relative. We knew their name and date of birth.We needed to inform them of the death of their mother. We contacted the Salvation Army who found them, (they had changed their surname by deed poll). They were able to do this via the NI number. They may be able to help.
