Hi,

I'm trying to work out if 'my' William Duggan is the William Duggan listed in the below census of 1828.

He arrived in Sydney from Ireland on a convict ship called the 'Tyne', he was sentenced to 7 years and was born in 1802.

His age and sentence are correct however the ships name doesn't look like the Tyne to me. There was no other William Duggan’s' that arrived in Sydney in 1819 so I'm a bit perplexed?

Also could someone kindly explain what 'Class' means and what the initials stand for,

Class has abbreviations for the following.
Free settler
Bonded convict
Ticket of leave
Certificate of freedom
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

This must not be my William Duggan as he was granted a 'Certificate of Freedom' in 1826- two years prior to the census and i'm pretty sure those intials are T.L.

Sorry, but I differ from Neale regarding the “Class” of resident. I think they are:
TL—Ticket of Leave
FS—Free Settler
CP—Conditional Pardon
BC—Born in the Colony (notice there are no ships, dates of arrival or sentences)
GS—Government Servant

While it is hard to tell whether William Duggan’s initials are TL or FS it would probably be FS because by 1828 he had served his full sentence.

I can’t definitively decipher the remarks in the Ship column but, perhaps because William and Thomas Turnbull above him were now free, it may be something like “attes(tation)” referring to their relatively recent free status. (The other people now “Free Settlers” arrived at least 5 years earlier.)

I don’t think there’s anything on the record that would preclude him from being “your” William.

I believe the entry posted is for William Duggan per Atlas 1819. Thomas Turnbull was also on that ship.
What religion was your William? RC or Protestant?

My reading of Duggan's class is F.S. ie free by sevitude
suggest you look at person 1 -  i believe t l vs person 2 f s

Be aware cenaua data wad collected and some of the original documents exiat than iy was compilrd and copied befoew being sent to uk, so you need to ne aware of which copy you are lokking at.  As the ship ;isted for Duggan is similar in appearance to the ship of the person above him maybe this is ab of the time transcription error

The William Duggan ship 'Atlas' mentioned in the 1828 Census you attached had a relationship with Maria nee PEARCE.  If you look at the census Maria and her daughter Jane 5y appear below.  The William Duggan & Maria Pearce had two children I know off Eliza & William.
