Maybe the NICOLs were the outliers and lumped in with the McNICOLs in the mind of the local sexton

Try looking at the spelling of Wetherston  Weatherstone with and without an extra s.
One of my ancestors arrived at that locality from Bendigo (and where did that name come from ?)
Then there is the related name Wedderburn/Wetherburn
