St. Marks Dundela
« on: Thursday 29 December 22 18:57 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody know how I can search baptismal records for St. Marks Dundela Belfast. Looking for a baptism record of my father Robert Falkland Carey, born August 1907 mother's name Annie Elizabeth Carey.
Many thanks for any help. Fran.....

PRONI only has C.I. Dundela (Down diocese)
Baptisms, 1869-89.

As sam.b says, contact the church office.

Fran
Just come across this.
I grew up attending St Marks as did dad and his parents & grandparents. Perhaps 10 years ago the St Mark's website had a link to a spreadsheet of baptisms on a sub page, though it likely should not have been on the public website or at least cut off eg 100 years ago as eg my baptism is on it, and many friends & surnames I recognise still very much alive. It has long been removed & I have never and won't distribute or forward it. Baptism records commence April 1864, when it worshiped in a building at the junction of Holywood Road and Belmont Road also used as Strandtown National School (now the Tesco Express store) until the present church was built & consecrated Aug 1878.

SURNAME / Birth date / Bapt. date / Child's forename / Father's forename / Mother's forename / Father's occupation [+ sponsors from 1956]

I would have provided the info for 1907 but there have never been any baptisms in St Marks for the surname Carey or an infant with that second forname.

As Robert was born Albertbridge Road and the informant of Thorndyke Street, perhaps you should consult St Clement's, Templemore Avenue or St Patrick's Ballymacarrett https://www.downanddromore.org/find-a-church/stclement & https://www.downanddromore.org/find-a-church/ballymacarrett
see map https://www.genuki.org.uk/node/143375/churches/1
I see from the 1911 census the family were C of I.

Thank you Jon_ni, so so much for your help. You have been so kind in taking time to reply. I will certainly contact St. Clements and St. Patrick's to try and find my Dad's baptism. He must have been baptised somewhere!!  My grandmother (Dad's Mum) Annie Elizabeth Carey was married in St. Marks in 1916, and her sister Maude was married in St. Claments in 1918 so both churches were used by the family.
As I live in England it is not so easy for me to research these things. But hopefully I will maybe manage a trip this year to Belfast, it would be good to visit home again.
Once again many thanks for your time and help. Fran....

Presumably you are hoping a father might be mentioned as otherwise the baptism just adds an event and date to the birth certificate info. FYI William & Florence Hewitt were not baptised St Marks and neither was their father David.
Wonder where your father Robert got that 2nd forname from, is an usual one, no one in the census with the surname Falkland or on irishgenealogy BMD's.
PRONI's https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/guide-church-records shows all St Clement's records as being in local custody, I presume St Patrick's, Ballymacarrett for that era are too.

Hi John,

Thanks again for the information you so kindly sent me. My sister and I have been working on our family tree for years, also our grandmother was very interested in family history but she never divulged the name of our father's father!! Obviously our daddy was illegitimate and try as we may it might always be a secret.
The middle name of Falkland is on our tree and linked to Lucius Cary (Carey) 2nd Viscount Falkland, this is where my grandmother got it from as she had a very old family tree. Lots of history!!!
So maybe a trip to visit churches for the baptismal records on the hope granny put dad's dad's name on that, she might have, she was a very regular church attendee. She was the last person you would imagine having a child out of wedlock!!!
Anyway John, on with the search. Many thanks Fran..
