In researching my great-great-grandfather, John Henry, I came across this photo taken outside the Royal Oak in Lydd, Kent (Copyright Lydd Museum, Postcard owned by Roy Moore).
John Henry was a coastguard in Lydd in the 1870s, and my interest was piqued by the fact that the man on the far right appears to be a man of colour. John was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1830.
The uniforms look a bit flamboyant, but could they be dress uniforms of some description? Help in dating the photo would be greatly appreciated.
