I've just realised that I have quite a few photos of the area that I took about 20-20 years ago.  I'll look out some of the most relevant ones and put them up.

Quite a few of my ancestors were from Pontfaen Wern, Gledrid etc.

I was a bit unsure about that too - I looked at the same map. However, from your later quote:

The train was an hour late and packed out but 'it was impossible to pass such important places as Pontfaen and Castle Mill without setting down.’

Maybe since it was a tramway rather than a railway, and ran along the road for part of its route, the "stations" were more like bus stops and weren't marked on the map.

Just a thought - she said that a place name was unpronounceable and you mentioned the possibility that it could be Anglesey which made me think of Llanfair PG which for most people fits that description.

The land is very steep in that area  - on both banks of the Ceiriog.  The road leading up from the bridge to Weston Rhyn is particularly steep. On the Welsh side it's less steep but there was just the road and a path leading up to the Castle area which was very wet.  There is an embankment showing on the map opposite the bridge on the Welsh side. It would be a jumping off point at most rather than anything else. The houses in Pontfaen were on one side of a steepish lane going right (west) from the bridge. Other dwellings were scattered about the hillside. The area was very rural.  Castle Mill was flat with one of two dwellings. I have a pic of that area too.

I've found  photo of the houses on my other machine but it is now being difficult and updating PS!!
