LIVINGSTONE Family Photo - help with dating and identification
« on: Monday 26 December 22 00:51 GMT (UK) »
The attached photo was passed on to me with no identifying information other than the notation "Buckley Clan". I believe the photo is of my LIVINGSTONE ancestors who gathered in 1912 to celebrate the 80th birthday of CRAWFORD LIVINGSTONE, nee Spencer. The Livingstones came to Connecticut from Glasgow in 1873. A newspaper clipping confirms the event as taking place in September 1912 in Taftville, CT, and lists some family who attended from out of town.

I believe the elderly couple seated center are my g-g-g-grandparents JOHN LIVINGSTONE (1833-1917) and CRAWFORD SPENCER LIVINGSTONE (1832-1916) however I have no other photographs of them to be sure. I would like to confirm if possible by using clues from known photographs of other family members. Is this possible here? Can anyone help me confirm either way the identification of the following people in the photo? The second attached file includes photos of known family members.

I've listed their names, birth year, and my guess at who they might be in the "clan" photo:
Mary, b. 1854 (seated to the immediate right of the elderly woman?)
Margaret, b. 1858 (seated to the left of the elderly gentleman, dressed in black?)
David, b. 1869 (seated on the far left?)
Thomas, b. 1863 (holding the cornet?)
Alice, b. 1875 (seated far right?)
John, b. 1880 and Clara, b. 1882 (standing at the far right, immediately behind potential Alice?)
Sarah, b. 1877 (standing immediately behind the elderly woman?)
Grace, b. 1908 (small child standing far right, with potential Alice?)
Jesse, b. 1906 (girl seated on ground in front of elderly woman?)

Thank you for any assistance you can provide!
Wendy

Can't do much about identifying, but here's a slight cleanup. A great looking family and all seem very happy!

Carol or Jim would know but I think the high collar style which most of the men are wearing is Edwardian - say 1908-10.

I've found a similar collar style which Jim has dated 1905 to 1912

Hi Wendy,

I didn’t open your second attachment, so I can’t help with identification.  But, I have a very similar photo of my ancestors, although there were only 19 people in my photo.  ;).  Mine was taken c1903.

I originally knew the identity of only two individuals. I eventually figured out that my gggrandfather (James, who was widowed) was in the centre of the photo. James’ adult children were sitting with their spouses, with the children sitting on the ground in front of their parents.  My grandfather was injured when he was young and I knew how many siblings he had, which made that family’s identification easy.  Once I realized the families were placed near each other, it wasn’t too long before I could identify everyone.  (It helped that James’ two unmarried daughters were sitting next to each other which helped me figure out that the married couples were sitting next to their spouses.)

If your folks used a similar seating arrangement, perhaps you might be able to look for family groups.  I hope this has helped.  Lisa

The man at the far right of the group possibly worked outdoors and wore a hat when doing so?  His forehead seems lighter than the rest of his face.

Do you know who played musical instruments?

Is it possible that the man seated near him was left-handed?  He’s holding his cigar in his left hand.
