Same Marriage Index Number for Two Different People
« on: Thursday 22 December 22 00:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi Group,

I am hoping someone can help me unravel a conundrum I came across on FreeBMD.

I was searching for the wife of Theodore George Dedman.  I was aware her first name was Alice, they were married in Havant, Hampshire and the index was 2b 993.

The search returned an "Alice Rose Hobbs" and a "Alice Pearce", who both share the same index number.

How can you have two people sharing the same index number on the same date?

I have attached a screen grab of the result for reference.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

StevieB  :)

I think it looks like there are 4 people on the same page of the marriage register:

William Henry ASTON
Theodore George DEDMAN
Alice Rose HOBBS
Alice PEARCE

Theodore married either Alice - you would probably need to see the certificate to work out which one. Or if there are children from the marriage, find out what their mother's maiden name was on the birth regsitration.

In fairness to Stevie, from the screenshot provided I can see why there was the confusion. Stevie, you need to click on the page number (in this case 993) to see all the names on the page.  :)

The marriage registers often have two marriages to a page, so there may be four people referenced under the same volume and page. Older registers may have more marriages per page, and the volume and page reference can relate to six or even eight people. That is why when you search for a marriage, you may often see the result, "Fred Smith married Jane Brown or Sally Grey". It may be necessary to find a copy of the original register image to ascertain which was the correct spouse for Fred Smith, but depending on the dates involved a subsequent census entry, or several, can often help confirm which was correct.

As maddys52 has said, if searching via FreeBMD the page number is linked, and clicking on it opens details of the full entry, which shows all the names on that page of the register (but still doesn't show who married who). So further investigation is often needed to work that out, unless you already know the answer. Census entries, searches for baptisms under the father's surname within 10 years of the marriage date, etc. can often disclose the wife's first name.

It is not an index number, it is a page number.  The other is a volume number.
