James Holahan and Ellen Holahan
« on: Monday 19 December 22 23:34 GMT (UK) »
My 2 ggrandfather, James Holahan (born ~1831 in Ireland) came to New York in 1866. His wife and son, Ellen (born ~1834 in Ireland) and George (born ~1860 in Manchester England) arrived in 1868. I believe they left from Liverpool, but I haven't been unable to find any passenger lists with their names to confirm that information. I have searched Ancestry and Family Search. Are there any other sources that I should research that would help in my search?

There are various links to passenger lists here - https://www.germanroots.com/onlinelists.html  I've seen people who came to New York by way of Boston or Philadelphia, so don't rule out them going to other ports.

Also, at one time it was less expensive to sail to Canada then travel to America.  Having said that, I’ve not yet found their arrival in either country.  Note: I’ve found very few of my Irish and English ancestors (on passenger lists) so I’m not too surprised that your Holahans have not yet been found.

Hopefully you have been looking for variations of the spelling of the surname.  John Grenham's website has a list of different spellings

Is this the son George?
1880 Census- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ8V-R92
George Holahan, 22, stone cutter, born England, parents (James, also a stone cutter, & Ellen) born Ireland living in Brooklyn.

FamilySearch also have a (submitted) tree which would need to be verified-
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LRZL-L5Y

Marriage & death give his mother's name as Ellen Howard-
marriage- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2CN-94WX (Hoolahan)
death- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WTK-BC4

I think if you check census records there wil be a variation for the year arrived in U.S. which is not uncommon.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
