But then I also found a UK regimental registers of service record:
Name:John Gilbert
Birth: about 1793
Birth location: Wantage, Berks
Military enlistment date: 3/12/1813
Attestation: Galway

He was certainly 14th Foot. Discharged 23 December 1817.

Yes I did find that! I contacted the eBay seller and asked if they had any more photos of it that they wouldn’t mind sharing with me but they said they didn’t have them.

So do you think this could definitely be the soldier I am looking for?

It's certainly very likely. The muster rolls for February 1814 and September 1816 (online on Ancestry) list only one John Gilbert in 14th Foot: he was in 3rd Battalion initially and had transferred to 2nd Battalion by September 1816.

Following this with interest.

The only John Gilbert baptised in Wantage, Berkshire in 1793 (+/-5 years) is this one:

John Gilbert, born 8 Feb 1791, baptised 25 Apr 1791 in Wantage, Berkshire, to Richard & Sarah Gilbert.
