14th Regiment of foot 3rd Battalion 1816 John Gilbert
« on: Saturday 17 December 22 11:38 GMT (UK) »
I have found a possible ancestor through a baptism of Maria Gilbert on 29th April 1816 Chichester Sussex. Father - John Gilbert, Mother - Elizabeth.
John is down as living at the Barracks and in the 14th Regiment.
Does this mean the 14th Foot Regiment stationed at Chichester Barracks?
I’ve found a John Gilbert on the Waterloo Medal roll and he’s listed as being in the the 14th Foot regiment 3rd Battalion.
Is there somewhere I could find out if the John I have found on the medal roll is the same John on the baptism certificate?
I don’t know anything else about John and Elizabeth at present.
Tia

Hello
Yes John Gilbert would be living at Chichester Barracks.
In 1814 he was already on the strength with the 14th Regiment stationed at Weedon Northants
(on the march 25.2.1814 ).
By 25th September 1816 he has been sent to St Maria

Thank you so much for the info! I don’t suppose there is a way to find out his year and place of birth?

Hello
Sorry I'm struggling with those. You'd need his enlistment or pension and I can't find either.
But then I'm sure an Army expert would do much better and find him a minute.
Sorry

Don’t worry, please don’t be sorry. I’m very grateful that you had a look for me. I was on ancestry last night and found the following soldier (see below). The only thing that’s off is the enlistment year! So that’s thrown that out.
Name:John Gilbert
Enlistment Age:   11
Discharge Age:   33
Birth Date: abt 1808
Birth Place: Warrington, Lancaster, England
Enlistment Year: 1819
Discharge Year: 1841
Regiment:   Fourteenth Regiment of Foot
Regimental Number:   Guards 366/979

But then I also found a UK regimental registers of service record:
Name:John Gilbert
Birth: about 1793
Birth location: Wantage, Berks
Military enlistment date: 3/12/1813
Attestation: Galway

So I’m going to look into these.

Eskilson - East London / Sweden
Barwick - Dalton, Yorkshire North Riding

According to the below, the 3rd Battalion of the 14th Regiment was raised in 1813 and mainly consisted of young & inexperienced men.  They fought at Waterloo, but the battalion was disbanded in 1816: https://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armyunits/britishinfantry/14thfoot.htm

MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

Thank you for the info. That helps with my research as I know that if John Gilbert enlisted before 1813 then it would have been a different regiment.
Sorry a side line, I see you have a name of interest on your profile, Snowball from Durham. I too have Snowball’s from Durham in my maternal ancestry. Elizabeth Eleanor Snowball born 1861 Sunderland was my 3rd GG. Married Charles Norris Dawson.

I think it must be a different line as mine lived mainly around Houghton le Spring, although I can trace them back to Wolsingham.

Ah ok, yes sounds like it might be a different line. My line go back to Witton Gilbert in Durham and St Nicolas in Durham.
