Jane or Jean Clugston

I'm having a wee bit trouble with this one from my own family tree.  I haven't got a confirmed birth date - indicated by the Census to be 1793 in Lanarkshire, but I've found a record for someone of the same name in 1799. She married John Mitchell on 25 Sept 1819. Later census shows John's wife to be named Jane Cameron, however I initially thought she may have used a different maiden name (curiously the kids are also shown named Cameron and living with John Mitchell). The plot thickens further in that all the kids are shown to have Jean Clugston as their mother and when one died in 1855, the register was signed by the child's 'stepfather' William Davie.
My take is that Jane Cameron and Jane (Jean) Clugston are different people and that the latter moved out to live with William Davie. The maternal role may then have been taken over by Jane Cameron.
The probem is that I cannot find any indication of later marriage of Jean Clugston or indications in any sbsequent census of her living with William Davie.  Indeed, I can't find any trace of Jean Clugston after 1841. Ive checked death and census records for Scotland.
all the chuldren's death certifiactes show their mother to be Jean Clugston.
John Mitchell's death certificate shows him to be the widower of Jane Cameron.
Any one have any ideas?

The children of John MITCHELL and Jean CLUGSTON  were William 1820, Mary 1822, James 1825, John 1827 and Jean 1830.

Is your John the one in Barony in 1841 with an unnamed female MITCHELL aged 48, Jean 16, Barbra 14, Agnes 9, all with the surname MITCHELL?  In 1851 he is in Calton with Jean CAMERON 58, Barbra CAMERON 24, and Agnes CAMERON 19.

Wouldn't these probably be the children of Jean CAMERON and you need to find Jean CLUGSTON/MITCHELL, hopefully with at least a couple of her own children in 1841 and 1851?

This is where the problem is when you see the 1841 and 1851 census results. These are the same children and I'm sure the 'John' is the same one.  Its just the issue re Cameron/Clugston that is the strange one.  The death certificates show them to be the chilren of Jean Clugston.

The children in the census records are not his children with Jean CLUGSTON.  He didn't have a Barbara or Agnes and Jean is the wrong age.

Three more children, non-conformist baptisms, Margaret 1832, Peter Pindar 1834 and Janet Hunter 1837.  Parents John MITCHELL and Jane CLUGSTON/CLEGSTON.

Jean would have been pretty old by then.  Might be worth looking at the birth for father's occupation if it is your Jean, might make them easier to find in the census, but they may not have yet been in a relationship then.

They are probably the couple at 25 James Street, Calton in 1861.  William DAVIE, 42, Jean DAVIE, 60, William DAVIE, 20.  William Snr. is an engine feeder.

It sounds fanciful, but that's what the records are indicating.

Absolutely. But the biology suggests there's something very odd about the records.
