The Africa Star could be awarded to members of the Royal Navy if they served anywhere in the Mediterranean or Red Sea during the qualifying period (see below), so for instance involvement in Operation Torch in 1942.
As far as land forces were concerned just one day's service with an operational unit in the Middle East Force area (North Africa, the Mediterranean coast from Suez to Gibraltar including Malta but excluding Italy and the Aegean, plus Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya and Somaliland) during the period 10 June 1940 to 12 May 1943.
If this Star was awarded to the uncle, then provided that he had six month's service overseas (as seems likely) he would have also been entitled to the 1939-45 Star, and the War Medal (just 28 days service anywhere between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945).
