Which Gatehouse brother? - Gillingham, Dorset
« on: Friday 09 December 22 08:55 GMT (UK) »
The attached photo is one of my great grandmother's brothers, Fred Gatehouse (1868-1942) or Arthur Gatehouse (1889-1976).

The question is, which brother is it?  Fred married in 1891, Arthur in 1911. Could it have been a pre-wedding photo?

Both lived in Gillingham, Dorset where the photo was taken. The name of the photographer (shown on the bottom right of the picture) was E. Berry.

The chap in the pic, I think, looks to be in his forties.  Is anyone able to date the clothing he is wearing, or even his hairstyle?

Any help will be gratefully received.

Joy

I'm not an expert at dating but I wonder if the centre parting may indicate a date in the 1890s for the picture.

I am not sure the age would be in the 40s.  I would have said 30s.

The  collar and tie suggest the 1890s, so more likely to be Fred.

Thanks shanreagh and gadget for your feedback. It's interesting that you both think it may have been taken in the 1890s.

Shanreagh, having taken another look, I think you could be right about the age.

At the moment it's looking like Fred could be our man :)

I've attached a scan of the back of the pic but sadly there's not much to see.

The divided back postcard was introduced in 1902 in the UK.

The stamp box shows it as a K Ltd. 1918-1936.

Ernest Berry was a photographer b. circa 1879/80,Wells. He must have moved to Gillingham in the 1910s and was there by the 1920s.
