McFarland, Smith, Steele in Dungiven area
« on: Friday 02 December 22 04:43 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandparents were John McFarland (1822-1900) and Rose Ann Smith (1823-1900) they lived at Drumneechy and Gorticlare near Dungiven. John was a labourer and they had about 8 children - Maria (1840-1929), William (1844-1875), Isabella Hazlett (1845 died in infancy), John (1847-1926), Ezekial (1849-1933), James (1852- ?), Isabella ( 1854-1939) and Jane (1856-1946) my great grandmother. The children's baptisms and marriages were mostly in the Presbyterian Church.

I have been unable to find a marriage for John McFarland and Rose but it would probably have been about 1838/9 in the Dungiven/Bovevagh area. On Emerald Ancestors there is a marriage at Bovevagh Presbyterian Church on 12 Feb 1836 between Rose Smith and Joseph Steele but I have not been able to find a death/burial for Joseph Steele. I would love to know if any of these names - John McFarland, Rose Ann Smith and Joseph Steele occur in other records in the Dungiven/Bovevagh area in the 1830's.

On the death cert of Rose Ann McFarland it says daughter Isabella was present and that she was a Little now.

Hi Alan
Yes that is the family I am researching. Thanks for your reply. John Henry LITTLE (groom) and Ezekiel McFARLAND (a Witness and brother of the bride) were both members of the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1871. Ezekiel resigned from the RIC on 4 Jul 1872 and sailed to New York and then joined the Toronto Police 10 Aug 1872. John Henry and Isabella LITTLE lived in Belfast and had 9 children.

Best wishes for a Happy New Year and for 2023
