Sponsors on Baptism
« on: Wednesday 26 October 22 16:43 BST (UK) »
Would it be a fair assumption to say that most "sponsors" in 1800's to early 1900 would have been related to family = possibly brothers or sisters of the parents?
Draperstown: Trowlan, Quinn, Convery, Kelly, McKenna, Griffin, Sergeant, Hamilton, Taylor.
Monaghan: Duffy, McArdle
Sligo: Egan.
Mayo: Loftus.
Dungannon: Reilly, Milligan, Ryan, Harte.

It might depend on whether they had close family nearby. Another variable is where a baby was in the birth order. Also depends on when in the century, whether pre or post Famine.

Added.

Well, if they are brothers or sisters, they will have the same surname, so should be relatively easy to see that they are probably a relation. Cousins also a possibility of course.

A different surname if they were married.
Possibly older sibling of baby if baby was at younger end of family.
Neighbours, who may also have been relatives.

Of course. But I was specifically addressing the possibility of being brothers or sisters.
As for a possible name change via marriage for a sister, that is relatively easy to check via the online marriage registration records.
