Emily and Jane O'Brien baptismal records
« on: Friday 30 September 22 05:10 BST (UK) »
I am seeking help to find 2 baptismal records. Parents are John O'Brien and his wife Jane Elizabeth Trumper of Sydney NSW.

Emily Harriet O'Brien 1870-1952 Sydney  NSW BDM:  75/1870
Jane O'Brien:            1862 -       Sydney   NSW BDM:  493/1862

I have located the baptismal records of their siblings who were all baptised at St Andrew's Cathedral Sydney.  It seem odd that these 2 girls baptismal records cannot be found as they where not the first or last to be born.  The mother Jane Trumper died in Childbed in 1874 and I assume this child died with her as I have found no BDM record for the child.

Siblings and baptismal records located:
Frances  1858-1943
Ellen 1860-1931
Eliza Ann  1864-1888
Annie Ada  1867-1948
Alice  1872-1883

I also have fairly good information on all the children except Jane is very elusive.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.

Death certificate for Jane TRUMPER, died 1874...how does it identify her children?

Where is Jane buried?

THE FRIENDS of Mr. JOHN O'BRIEN, Coachtrimmer....deceased WIFE, Jane.....residence, Gloucester-terrace, Macquarie-street South........ Necropolis.

I do not see burial for Jane Elizabeth O'BRIEN.

You could write to the cemetery, identifying the burial date of Jane, and ask for other burials in the same plot.

Thanks for your questioning.
A further obituary was placed in 'The Sydney Morning Herald Friday 23 Oct 1874':
"O'Brien - Oct 22 at her residence, Gloucester-terrace, Macquarie Street South, Jane, the beloved wife of John O'Brien coach trimmer, aged 38 years in childbed leaving an affectionate husband and seven children to mourn their loss".
Although this doesn't identify the children by name, I have firmly identified 6 through a range of records, not so sure about young Jane (1862-) though.

Find a Grave has a photo of the headstone which records Jane (mother who died 1874), her mother also called Jane and her father called Charles Trumper, Emily Low, James and Emma Low (I think the Low family is part of the Trumper family), Alice O'Brien. John is also recorded here.  Unfortunately, the headstone is very hard to read in the photo.
Rockwood General Cemetery:  Old Anglican Section A Plots 148-150 in S.A.G.

Frances, Annie Ada and Emily Harriet are buried at Woronora. Ellen is buried at Waverly Sect 6 Row 1.
Their sister Jane (1862-) is elusive in baptism, marriage and death!

Thanks again

I don't think Jane was alive at the time of her father's death in 1917.

Many thanks for the article.  I had hunted high and low for a death notice for John but hadn't found one so this helps immensely. Frances, Annie and Emily all lived together so this obituary notice is helpful
Ellen had married into the Mallesch family, and she is included in that family's obituary notice.
But not reference to young Jane!

Whoa, John's death cert has just arrived online, how timely :)

The record has the following children as living: Frances 56, Ellen 54, Jane E 53, Annie A 47 and Emily 44. Deceased 2 (these will be Eliza and Alice). The informant is George Smith, son-in-law and husband of Eliza).

Always more questions!!
Thanks again

Have you discounted this one? Bit of a long shot!
NSW BMD Death

Jane  O'BRIEN, parents JOHN, JANE, death registered NEWTOWN
Below is possibly the Death Notice for this woman, which makes her about the correct age, especially as she's listed as being 53 on the 1917 death cert for her father.  Very common names though  ???

Thanks, Judith, for your thoughts.

I am very happy to report that with the thoughts from RootsChat and Find a Grave, I have solved the mystery of Jane O'Brien.  She was born in 1862 and died in 1943 and is buried alongside her sisters, cousin (Charles Low) and George Smith at Woronora cemetery.  The confusing bit was she married George Frederick Smith who was initially the husband of her sister Eliza.  Eliza had died within months of her marriage to George.
George died in 1947.

Many thanks again to you all.

Thanks for letting us know.  Very pleased that you found her - not easy with the Smith surname!
