I am presuming Ellen was mother of Angus Macphee the' grass weaver' and could have been sent to a hospital far from home
Looking on SP found Ellen Mcphee age 69 died 1946 Camlachie (Glasgow) and Ellen McPhee aged 77 in 1955 at Milton, Dumbarton. Ages few years out and second death after 'widowed' husband
Hi Wred...Yes, Ellen was the mother of Angus John, "Silent Weaver / Weaver of Grass / Grass Weaver"...
However, I had searched extensively on SP for Ellen/Helen's death to no avail.
1946 - Ellen McPhee (Camlachie) - matching entry, surname Murphy
1955 - Ellen McPhee (Milton) - matching entries, surnames Hodge & McCann
Extra surnames denotes other names known by / other marriages...
I ruled out 1946 on the basis Ellen was single when she married Neil M(a)cPhee & ruled out 1955 as their daughter Patricia married in 1946 & Ellen was 'Deceased' on her MC.
I do however appreciate your input.
Monica...Yes, it's a really interesting & poignant story for sure, such an artistic man which seems to have been recognised/noticed way too late in his time in Craig Dunain! I'd read about Angus but some of the links you provided I hadn't seen (thank you)!
My interest isn't so much on AJ being a relative (how nice it would be to have someone 'famous' from South Uist)!

Joking aside, I'm following up on DNA matches who relate to him & as I have a lot on his Uist line, I wanted to tie up ends with his mother's side as it's been an enigma for quite some time.
I have several links with the MacPhee surname but I can't quite place where the connection is yet although it may be via his g/m or g g/m?

I feel so sorry for AJ (RIP) as his early works were discarded & it seems people didn't take notice/interest in his incredible ability, a talent we've never seen before & almost lost in history through people assuming patients in Psychiatric Hospitals were 'stupid' & probably laughing at his 'Masterpieces', so very sad to read indeed
