aghadowey - I didn't see an option to view the DC after purchasing credits i.e. I ordered it £8.00.

It's not very user friendly in my opinion or maybe I'm just not accustomed to the site, have only used it a handful of times & the last time I used it, my purchased cert. never arrived!

doodsie - I found the tree which gave me a marriage of one of the 3 daughters, another I have from SP which I found earlier.

That tree doesn't have the middle name of the son Angus Joseph 1915 - 1997 which is clear on the birth index & original image as well as his death index.

I don't normally use others' trees in my research as I've found so many errors with matches in my tree i.e. it's the last place I think to go to although not all are wrong & many are well researched.

Did you register or just click on the link to 'order certificate'?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I was already registered with them, I bought more credits...however, I went back & managed to find the DC, thank you as it's not very clear.

Hi Annie

I am presuming Ellen was mother of Angus Macphee the' grass weaver' and could have been sent to a hospital far from home

Looking on SP found Ellen Mcphee age 69 died 1946 Camlachie (Glasgow) and Ellen McPhee aged 77 in 1955 at Milton, Dumbarton. Ages few years out and second death after 'widowed' husband. But you ever know.

Hope it helps

What an interesting story the life of Angus McPhee, Annie.

I wonder what the source for the death of Ellen being in 1922 for this reference here:

Neil MacPhee of 52 Balgarva married Ellen McHendry of County Antrim in Glasgow in 1912. Neil was a farm labourer, and the couple lived at various locations in Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire.

Following Ellen’s death in 1922 Neil returned to the croft at 52 Balgarva with his four young children.

One of the books quoted: The Silent Weaver: The Extraordinary Life and Work of Angus MacPhee, gives a lot of background on the family around the time you are looking at, Annie.

See shortened link here www.rootschat.com/links/01rut/

I can't see numbering of pages to help but it should come up at the right page (about half way down it starts).

Added: This might be an easier read  ;) https://readsbookonline.com/the-silent-weaver-f/5

It talks about the period from the marriage in 1912 up to 1922 when they state that Ellen died in Ireland. Gives some brief backround as to why she went to Ireland.

Possibly 1922 should be 1923 with what Kiltaglassan has found?

Hi Wred...Yes, Ellen was the mother of Angus John, "Silent Weaver / Weaver of Grass / Grass Weaver"...

However, I had searched extensively on SP for Ellen/Helen's death to no avail.

1946 - Ellen McPhee (Camlachie) - matching entry, surname Murphy

1955 - Ellen McPhee (Milton) - matching entries, surnames Hodge & McCann

Extra surnames denotes other names known by / other marriages...

I ruled out 1946 on the basis Ellen was single when she married Neil M(a)cPhee & ruled out 1955 as their daughter Patricia married in 1946 & Ellen was 'Deceased' on her MC.

I do however appreciate your input.

Monica...Yes, it's a really interesting & poignant story for sure, such an artistic man which seems to have been recognised/noticed way too late in his time in Craig Dunain! I'd read about Angus but some of the links you provided I hadn't seen (thank you)!

My interest isn't so much on AJ being a relative (how nice it would be to have someone 'famous' from South Uist)!  ;D

Joking aside, I'm following up on DNA matches who relate to him & as I have a lot on his Uist line, I wanted to tie up ends with his mother's side as it's been an enigma for quite some time.

I have several links with the MacPhee surname but I can't quite place where the connection is yet although it may be via his g/m or g g/m?  ::)

I feel so sorry for AJ (RIP) as his early works were discarded & it seems people didn't take notice/interest in his incredible ability, a talent we've never seen before & almost lost in history through people assuming patients in Psychiatric Hospitals were 'stupid' & probably laughing at his 'Masterpieces', so very sad to read indeed  :'(

A wee bit off topic but for others interested in Craig Dunain (Inverness)...

https://graveyardsofscotland.com/2016/02/10/graves-of-the-unwanted/

My g/uncle was a patient in Craig Dunain after WW1 as a 'Disabled Soldier' & died there of Toxaemia & Exhaustion of Acute Melancholia in 1934.

Both men were affected by the wars, not surprising coming from Catholic families on an island almost crime free, no violence & no experience of City life & all that goes with it.

A very emotive piece on the asylum, Annie.

From that link earlier, now on pg 6 https://readsbookonline.com/the-silent-weaver-f/6 it talks about:

There was a further cost, which many at that time and later preferred to ignore. More than one in every hundred members of the British Armed Forces in the First World War, 75,000 men, ‘were pensioned for mental and nervous diseases'. As late as 1922, 10,000 of those servicemen were still in asylums or hospitals. The effect was discernible even in the remotest parts of the kingdom, like a slight surge of the tide from a distant tsunami. During the war years of 1914 to 1918 the number of people admitted to the single lunatic asylum in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland jumped by 6 per cent, before falling again in the 1920s.

Tragic cost to wars as always.
