Passenger List enquiry
« on: Thursday 22 September 22 01:34 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a passenger list from August 1945 showing my Grandfather travelling from Southampton UK, to Sydney, Australia.
Stemship Line: Cunard White Star Limited, and the closest I can find for the name of the ship is Rangitata, however when I serach for that ship it is registered to the New Zealand Shipping Company.

I am just wondering if during this unsettled time, did they "code share" in the way airlines do today?
I will try to attach a copy of the document I am using

Thanks in advance

Sapsord/ Sapsford - Middx

Cannot solve the Cunard/NZ shipping company code share conundrum.
But Isn’t that a shipping list of arrivals at Southampton?

I am not sure I understand exactly what you want to know.
The Rangitata was used as troop ship, and also for transporting the wives and family of service men. At this time it was under the control of the Ministry of Defence (War transport).

There are numerous mentions on trove. See here .....
https://trove.nla.gov.au/search/advanced/category/newspapers?keyword=Rangitata&date.from=1945-01-01&date.to=1946-12-31&sortBy=dateAsc&startPos=0

Also here: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/GISH19460824.2.46?end_date=31-12-1946&items_per_page=10&page=3&query=Rangitata&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1945
and
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ODT19460111.2.30?end_date=31-12-1946&items_per_page=10&page=2&query=Rangitata&snippet=true&start_date=01-01-1945

I also suggest you search the Australian National Archives using the word "Rangitata".

I agree it is a list of passengers travelling TO England

This book says Cunard and Shaw Saville and the NZ Shipping company worked closely together.

NB, at that date, the war in the pacific had not ended.  They probably were not worrying too much about whose ship was whose. (One would hope)

However as already posted, the ship was under the control of the Ministry of Defence in 1945, and was returned to control of the owners (NZ Shipping Company) in 1946

Thank you all so much.
Wow, that was careless of me to get his journey the wrong way.
I wondered if ship ownership was a bit disrupted by the war. Thank you for your help.

I wonder what possessed him to make that journey at that time?
