Thomas Grieve and His Parents (Missing Records)
« on: Saturday 17 September 22 08:28 BST (UK) »
Hi  :)

I am trying to find the whereabouts of the birth record of my Grandfather's Grandfather Thomas Grieve who, according to the 1901 and 1911 Census', was born in Edinburgh circa 1863. I have used countless credits on the ScotlandsPeople site and many hours of searching on other Genealogy sites (mainly FindMyPast, Ancestry, and FamilySearch) trying to locate the record over the past couple of years to no avail.

Also, I cannot find any records for his parents who are both listed on Thomas' Marriage and Death records as John Herbert Grieve and Margaret Grieve (nee Goodall). Due to the information on Thomas' marriage record in 1897 I know that they were both deceased by the time he became married, but am struggling to find any records at all for his parents. I am also not aware if Thomas had any siblings or not due to finding such little information.

If anyone could assist me or give me any advice on where I may be going wrong it would be much appreciated. I will attach a link to the aforementioned records to this post for your viewing as the files are too large to attach to this post.

1911 Census - https://freeimage.host/i/4iPzGf
Marriage Record - https://freeimage.host/i/4iPxCG
Death Record - https://freeimage.host/i/4iPnQs

Thanks!

Andy  :)

There are 6 Thomas Grieve's registered in Midlothian on SP 1862- 1866, 2 have middle names, they were born Leith South, as were 2 others, 1 was born St Giles and 1 Inveresk and Musselburgh.

Have you looked at all of these?

On the marriage certificate, Thomas GRIEVE is 34 years old at 1897, and marrying Elizabeth MOONEY, aged 24 years.  Thomas GRIEVE b ~ 1863.

There is a 10 years difference in their ages, and it worth considering that Thomas took a few years off his age to be even 34 years old.

Look for him to be older than recorded age suggests.

Hi  :)

Thanks!

Andy  :)

Where did John's middle name come from it is not on the marriage record?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Can I ask where the 2 different records of residence come from in 1881 (Nairnshire/Peebleshire)?

I'd agree on the above being the incorrect family unless Thomas took a dramatic change of occ. from a Joiner in 1881 to a Miner in 1897 when he married.
