New searchable Post Office & Telephone directories for NSW and Tasmania
« on: Saturday 17 September 22 03:47 BST (UK) »
I've recently created some free, online, searchable versions of Post Office and Telephone Directories for NSW and Tasmania and thought they might be of use:

The directories had been digitised by SLNSW/Trove and Libraries Tasmania but were not easily searchable. I've put all the text content into databases, indexed it by line, and linked the text back to page images – so with one search you can get results across all the volumes in a series.

I've also created an aggregated Name Index Search that searches for names across 253 open datasets from 10 Australian libraries and archives – more than 10 million records: https://glam-workbench.net/name-search/

Hope you find them useful!

Great resource Tim. Thanks for sharing. I don’t have many in NSW and none in Tassie but managed to find a couple of relatives.

I’m going to request this be “stickied” at the top of the Australia board.  :)

Many thanks, Tim. What a great resource to be able to research from home!

I am from NSW and back from my great-grandmother also have a connection to Tasmania, so this is just perfect.

I have already found my great-great grandfather A J Potter in 1886-1887 as a draper. This must have been very soon after he arrived in Newcastle.  A most interesting character in family folklore.

Added: By 1889-1890 back to more regular professions of watchmaker/jeweller.

Wow ... great resources.    Much more "viewer-friendly".

Well done ... and thank you, Tim,   :)
