Kominsky family from Grodno

Elijah Kominsky (b. 1871) came to England between 1903 and 1907 with his wife and family.
From the 1911 Census it shows he was born in Astryna and his wife and first few children were born in Grodno.
Any ideas of how to trace records back into Grodno?

Hello Angela,

Did Elijah and his wife have any children in the UK?

The only Elijah Kaminsky that I can find in the 1911 census was living in Spitalfields with 6 daughters, having been born in Russia. Is this not the right family?

Yes that is the family. They went on and had a few more after 1911.

Is it the 1921 census, that gives the birth places as Astryna and Grodno?

GRO records for the 5 daughters born in the UK give their mother's maiden as Bardil, Bordy, Bordill and Boodie. The only vaguely similar surname that I could find in the JewishGen databases was BURDE/BURDA.

There was definitely an extended Kamenskiy/Kaminskii/Kamionsky family in Astryna, with a couple of individuals bearing the name Eliash/Elia. It is certainly a possibility that Elijah was related to this family.

Ah yes sorry it was the 1921 census.
I had searched the GRO and have the details of the various spellings of the mother's maiden name.
I have tracked most of the family forward but it is the back history I am trying to find.

Search here (https://www.rtrfoundation.org/search.php) to establish which records from Ostryna and Grodno have survived. It doesn't look very positive.

However, I would first recommend that have a good look through the pages of the website of JewishGen's Belarus Special Interest Group (https://www.jewishgen.org/Belarus/index.html)

You will probably need to contact Judy Baston (see https://www.jewishgen.org/Belarus/about/contact/index.html). Judy is the coordinator for research of the Jewish communities of the Lida district, to which Ostryna belonged.

It doesn't appear to be possible currently to access the webpages of the National State Archives of Belarus.
