The 1871 Census records that Mary was living at Rose Villa, High Street, Ferrybridge. She is described as being 36 years of age, married with the notation of 'Merchant's wife'. No mention of her husband, William.

In the Faroes it is told that Askham went to Australia and became harbour master in Sidney, but I have not been able to find any trace of him there. Also I find this story to be unlikly because another  Faroese man was in charge of the wharfs in Sidney around the same time. But still Askham may have gone down under.

He did indeed go to Australia - he was certainly living in Wollongong (New South Wales). (snippet image courtesy of Trove, a free web site to search)

If you click on the link below it will take you to Trove, Australian newspapers. If you type in William Askam in the 'phrase box' you should get about 11 hits.
