I'm a bit confused. In an earlier thread (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=865935.0) you asked about deciphering a marriage entry, but as far as I can tell, the format of the entry showed that it was from Scotland. I'm guessing this was John's marriage - so what date was the marriage, and what was John's age given as? And what denomination was the marriage - it should say in the first column ('according to the rites of ....')?

EDIT:
The entry for deciphering seems not to have been a marriage, so some of the above questions are irrelevant. See reply #9 below.

Then, do you have John in any censuses, which might help to confirm where he came from? It would also be a stroke of luck if there happened to be any aged relatives with him in a census. And if his parents died in Scotland after the start of civil registration in 1855, those records would help the search enormously.

I'm not saying you're wrong with Ballymena, it's just that before going very far with this we're going to need to know a bit more, including about the marriage or any other events that place him there.

Do you have their marriage? Is that the other thread?
The children show how they were in Port Glasgow in 1860s, Ireland in 1870s and then returned to Port Glasgow by 1881.

Residences
Michael 1870
Parish of Newtown Crommelin. I can’t find the townland
https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/newtown-crommelin1/

Patrick 1873
Irishomerbane https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/kilconway/dunaghy/newtown-crommelin/irishomerbane/

Hugh’s birth 1876
Legagrane  https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/kilconway/dunaghy/newtown-crommelin/legagrane/

As John was a labourer, it looks as though he moved around within the area, rather than perhaps living at his home place.

Just occurred to me that Michael’ birth shows ‘umerb…’ so perhaps the same as Patrick.
