Samuel TANFIELD of Tanfield & Potter - later Crown Lynn - arrived in Auckland on the Ship William Miles Departed London 29th Jul 1862  Arrived 13th Nov 1862.
Samuel spent a decade in Hamilton before returning to Auckland.   He was connected with the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church
On his Death Certificate [26 September 1900] he is shown as
born in Yorkshire
and his father is shown as John TANFIELD farmer
No information of his mother

Mmm,  can see the problem. The Samuel Tanfield b. 1841 Thirsk is with parents Thomas and Mary in 1841 and 1851 in Thirsk and boarding in Ripon in 1861. Can't see him after this which would tie in with him going to NZ. Thomas is not a farmer.

However, we know information on the death certificate is only as reliable as the informant's knowledge so there is a possibility that may be inaccurate.

I can't see another suitable Samuel Tanfield b. 1841 in Yorkshire.

Do NZ marriage certificates give the father's name and occupation? If so that would be my next step. I'm assuming that you don't have any certain link for Samuel with one of his siblings.

If you need the census entries let me know.

Marriage Certs of this era in NZ did not have parents although does reveal marriage in home of Brides Father Thomas Holmes who also was witness

My starting point is to try to eliminate John then Thomas & Mary become viable
Albert Thomas TANFIELD records his paternal Grandfather as John TANFIELD Grandmother unknown.  Does John TANFIELD one time farmer of Yorkshire exist ?
