Agnes Mary "Oonagh" Shanley Toffolo
« on: Sunday 11 September 22 02:17 BST (UK) »
If I have done my research correctly, with accurate documentation and sources, Agnes Mary "Oonagh" Shanley Toffolo is my 3rd cousin 1x removed.  She was a nun, who was permitted to leave the convent due to health reasons and who became spiritual advisor to Princess Diana.  The system will not allow me to attach a photo of Oonagh, Joseph (her husband) and Princess Diana that I received from another Shanley relative.  It is truly a special photograph.

Oonagh was born in County Leitrim in 1929.

There are online obituaries about her and a Penguin book has been published.
Are you looking for information?
There is a birth in Mohill, 1929. Her mother’s name McGurren.
Does that fit with your research?

Marriage of her parents

Welcome to rootschat kcshatto.

You have posted this on the DNA board, but it is not clear what you would like help with.

Is it related to your DNA matches connected to Agnes?

If your query is not DNA related and you have posted in the wrong place you can ask a moderator to move the thread to a more appropriate board.

so sorry, I was so excited I forgot to ask my question.

I've done my DNA via Ancestry but cannot find a DNA match to her.  Is it possible to have a connection via documentation and sources WITHOUT having a DNA connection?

Her brother, Kevin Patrick, died as a child and the only other sibling I can find is Nicholas, died 1999, but I cannot find any spouse or children for him.

Yes, this does fit with my research.  But I cannot find a DNA match for her - strictly documentation.  My DNA was completed on Ancestry and my Dad did YDNA on FTDNA before he died.  Shanley is his grandmother so not sure if his DNA would do me any good since it's the male lineage he was interested in (long story, but in a nutshell - his father died when he was 4.  father abandoned 1st family, "married" my grandmother after changing his name (even though his family knew what his new name was and where he lived and that he had a son)... so my Dad used the Y DNA test to "prove" John Bertrim Buchanan was, in fact, his father.  100% match with male cousin.

Anyway - I don't think I can use his DNA matches to narrow down a connection so I'm relying on mine.  I know you get 50% of your DNA from each parent, but you don't know which 50% of their DNA you are getting.  You can get 75% of the male lineage and 25% of the female lineage or whatever % ... I just don't know enough about DNA and matches for any of it to really make sense...

I can’t help with working that out sorry. I know with my DNA, some matches seem to have a closer match than others although the relationship is the same.
Have you done a paper trail with the Shanleys?
Where are your Shanleys from?
Who is your grandmother?

I have done as much of a paper trail as I can with the Shanleys.  My great grandmother is Mary Frances Shanley, from either County Roscommon or Longford - depending on the document.  There is also a DNA connection to Shanleys in Burnley, Lancashire, United Kingdom.  My 2nd cousin (our grandparents are siblings) has a greater cM to them than I do when looking at Shanley.

According to the latest DNA Painter Shared cM Project the range of cM for a 3c1r is 0-192cM. This means that it is possible, and indeed a fundamental part of that statistic, for the DNA to have become so diluted (not the correct genealogical term but it serves) that even though you are genetically related you may not share any DNA. Obviously zero shared DNA is at one extreme of the range but it clearly isn't unusual.

If you have not come across the DNA Painter Shared cM Project you can find it and lots of explanation here https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4
