1851 Census for Eastbourne Look up
« on: Monday 05 September 05 21:02 BST (UK) »

Hello All,

Could someone please look in an 1851 Sussex census for a Henry Stevens. He would be 22. I am trying to find out if he is married yet (to an Ann, nee Harris) or is he still living at home (his father, the head, would be Edmund - his mother Hannah). The family lived in South Bersted at the time of the 1841 census, but Henry and Ann's first child was born in Eastbourne in 1855. As much as I have tried, I have been unable to find their marriage date.

Would appreciate any information you can find about this family. Thank you in advance for your efforts.

Kind Regards,

Peter Groenink

No sign of any of them in the index for Eastbourne in 1851.   West Sussex is not well covered for the 1851 index so I cannot check South Bersted.  Someone would have to search the film I think.   If you can quote details from a later census then someone may find them for you.

I had a quick look and found them in 1861 and 71 when Ann's place of birth is Hove so perhaps that is where you should look for the marriage.  Am I right in assuming that she has died and he has remarried a Sarah by 1881?    That is what it looks like but one can make many mistakes with only a little knowledge!

Hello Andrea,

Thanx for the look up. You are quite right, Ann died and Henry married Sarah Muttitt in 1876.

I still have been unable to find Henry's first marriage date to Ann Harris. Ann, by the way, was born in Hooe, East Sussex, Hove being a common transcription error.

Thanx again for your efforts.

Peter.

Hi Peter,
Sorry can't help with the marriage of Henry & Ann as it's beyond the Sussex Marriage Index dates (goes up to 1837 ish) but here's the marriage of his parents to add to your information,

South Bersted, West Sussex,  Date: 13 Nov 1815:
 Edmund STEEVENS, bach.botp.(B)
 Hannah AUSTEN, sp.
 Witness wit;Ann STEEVENSThos.WISDOM.

Jane
