Hi Deborah

You don't need to use the National Archives search engine because these records or indexes to them aren't yet online.  The Royal Navy records are in the process of coming online - Registers of Seamens' Services:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

Read their information leaflets:

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=39

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=56

You need to visit in person to search for the records - the Royal Navy ones are easy to find - unless you wait for them to come online - I have never actually used the Marine records.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you want some information added to the CWGC site ???  I assume you mean that you would like to find out some more info about your relatives from the records at the National Archives mentioned above.

Best wishes

Deborah,
It is possible to get information added or amended by the CWGC.
It can however be a lengthy process and they require evidence that the new information you are offering is genuine. Even when, and if, the information is accepted there can be a considerable delay before it appears on the website.
I speak from experience having recently been involved in two such cases, one involving a change of headstone to show the correct regiment, and another to gain recognition for a forgotten QMAAC. It's well worth the effort though - both our cases had successful outcomes . . . I wish you all the best with your quest!

My great-grandfather's CWGC information gives his age as 51. Our records (based on copies of his birth certificate) give him as being 54 at age of death.

What would be my first step to get this information amended?

dedorah,if the info you have posted is correct, then the cwgc wont change anything, they will only make changes if the man/womans details are wrong, they wont add any further information.
alivicwil2,i cant be sure about your g/gfather,they may change it but i have my doubts,go on the great war forum and give terry denham a shout, terry worked for the cwgc,he still has many contacts there,he will tell you if its worth pursueing, theres nobody else who is more knowledgable than terry, good luck, mack

If you can provide them with sufficient accurate information the CWGC are willing to change information, even if you are not related to the individual in question.

I have experience of age and date of death being changed, changing of a headstone to one bearing the correct regimental badge, and the recent addition of a WW1 service woman to the Debt of Honour Register.

It is a lengthy process though!
